More than 30 Durham residents attended a two-hour presentation Tuesday, March 2, in an effort to prevent crime from occurring in their neighborhoods with the help of the town’s new communications system.

Prior to the March 8 Board of Selectmen meeting, the selectmen met in executive session with Charles R. Golden of Golden, Weise and Associates, LLC to go over a draft of the Blue Trail Range study. The board did not make a motion to accept the report as they felt additional changes needed to be made.

The Academy Awards have shaken up the race this year by expanding the Best Picture category from five to ten nominees. As if it wasn’t hard enough to see the top five! To make it easier for those of you who haven’t had the good fortune to see the best of the best, here is my Oscar countdown to who should win the big one.

District 13 Superintendent Susan Viccaro introduced the 2010-2011 proposed education budget on Wednesday, March 3. This year’s projected increase of 2.88 percent, combined with last year’s increase of 0.58 percent, yields an average increase over the last two years of 1.73 percent, said Viccaro.

Howard Francis Kelley, 79, of Durham, beloved husband of Renée, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, in Middletown. He was born in Boston, MA, the son of the late Howard and Mary (Kavanagh) Kelley.

Out of bad news, good things can come, as a group of students would show the Board of Education at their Feb. 24 meeting. The Coginchaug High School seniors, all friends of Michelle DiVicino, who died tragically last November in a car crash, gave a presentation on Teens in the Driver Seat, a program newly adopted at the high school.

The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, is 2009’s diamond in the rough. Set amid post-invasion Iraq, albeit filmed in Jordan and Kuwait, the film follows the deployment of U.S. Army’s Bravo Company, in particular the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit.
