With information that a Middlefield child has a probable case of the swine flu, Durham First Selectman Laura Francis is meeting daily with town sanitarian Bill Milardo and emergency management director Francis Willett as well as with counterparts in Middletown and the mass dispensing catchment area (who would be the ones to dispense antiviral medications) so everybody is on the same page. The town has also been in communication with the Center for Disease Control and the state. She said an official, detailed message will be sent out tomorrow to emails and newspapers using the old method – not the new emergency notification system.

“This is not a crisis yet, and we don’t want to scare people,” said Francis. “We are telling people to use your own precautions.” These include lots of hand-washing, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home from work or keeping your child home from school or daycare if signs of flu are present.

Finally, she said she is very sensitive to the fact that people have questions and wants everyone to know the government and the town have a plan.
