Robert (Bob) V. Poole, of Middlefield, died Wednesday morning, March 18, of heart failure. He was a tall and quiet, unpretentious man with a subtle sense of humor and an abiding presence, who loved hiking, canoeing, camping and being among the trees. An avid reader of classics and nautical adventures, he enjoyed working with wood and hand tools.

Born Oct. 12, 1923 in Chicago, he served in the Army Air Force during WWII and married Eleanor Rockwell in 1944. A graduate of Williams College with a BS in Physics, he built his own home in Middlefield where he lived with his family for nearly 60 years.

He worked at Connwood, Inc. of Middlefield and was superintendent of Middletown’s water supply at Mt. Higby Reservoir. He was a Boy Scout and explorer post leader and a founding member of the CT section of the Green Mt. Club. A dedicated maintainer and hiker on the long trail, in VT and many CT trails, Bob was a volunteer caretaker at Goose Pond, a beloved spot to him, and a life-time supporter of the Appalachian Trail Conference.

Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eleanor, his son Allan and wife, Nancy Winship, daughters Margaret and Laura (Morgan Lane) and three granddaughters Lindsey, Melanie and Greta. He is preceded in death by son Kenny and daughter Leslie Evis.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21, at 1 pm at South Congregational Church in Middletown, CT with reception to follow.
